Whanonga Pono | Our Values

At Pae Tauārai we believe that values are not something that you switch on and off when you come to work.

We live and work by a set of values that benefit the people we work with, our whānau, hapū, and iwi. It is a collective approach that we, as indigenous peoples, understand and live by.

We honour the past, tackle the present, stay focused on the future and we acknowledge the connections we have through the navigation made by our tūpuna across Moana-nui-a-kiwa, connecting us all back to Hawaiki, our origin.

Tāngata | People

What it means:

The connections through people and places, a way of being to understand the who and what we influence and in return influences us. A deep understanding of how we can affect and be affected by these relationships.

This aspect expands to include: manaakitanga, whānaungatanga, whaiwāhitanga.

How will we implement it:

We work by developing open, honest and genuinely collaborative relationships with all our partners; kiritaki/clients, communities, whānau, hapū, iwi, decision makers, and other pakihi.

Taiao | Environment

What it means:

Our obligation and responsibility to protect and sustain the natural world for generations to come. This aspect expands to include kaitiakitanga.

As we feel everything is connected, this principal also crosses the environment we engage with, at work and at home.

How will we implement it:

In everything we do we aim to act respectfully and responsibly toward our taiao and instill the value of kaitiakitanga in our future generations.

Mātauranga | Knowledge

What it means:

Mātauranga evolved in important and significant ways as our tūpuna encountered new environments across the pacific.  Mātauranga is a dynamic and constantly evolving system.

How will we implement it:

Similar to our wayfinding tūpuna, we use mātauranga to solve problems, plan, make decisions and choose ways forward for the benefit of everyone.

We are on an ongoing journey of our own learning and aim for all our relationships to be reciprocal, whereby we share what we know, and we learn from what others know, working collaboratively for the well-being of those to come.

Tōmene | Exploration

What it means:

Much like our tūpuna navigators they did not know the lands they would discover. Rather they relied on their mātauranga of navigation and holistic understanding of how tāngata and taiao was woven together.

They were courageous in their journey and trusted that the strong foundations of tradition and culture would keep them safe however they proceed.

How will we implement it:

It is through exploration that we can truly experience and understand our place and each other.

We learn through experience, and we will make better decisions tomorrow from the information we have unearthed today.
